HCSS GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS- class of 2023 and beyond

SUBJECTS Credits
English Language Arts 24 credits
All students must take a core English Course every year
Mathematics 32 credits
Including the completion of Algebra II and Geometry. All students must take a math course during their senior year.
Science 12 credits
Biology, Chemistry and Physics 
History/Social Science 16 credits
Including World History I, World History II , US History I , and US History II
Foreign Language 8 credits
of the same language in two years
Physical Education 8 credits

All students must take PE every year in High School

Additional Electives  60 credits 
Senior Research or AP Research All students must complete either Senior Research or  AP Research 
TOTAL 160 credits
Notes:

  1. The number of credits is calculated based on the number of periods per week.
  2. A student can earn a maximum of 160 in campus credits in high school
  3. Students may earn extra credit and exceed the school maximum credits by:
  • Dual enrollment courses from colleges approved by school
  • Online college or high school courses approved by school 
  1. College Courses with a passing score will be awarded credits based on the course.
  2. All students must complete 40 hours of volunteer work (Community Service)
The Massachusetts Education Reform Law of 1993, state law, G.L. c. 69, § 1D, requires that all students who are seeking to earn a high school diploma must meet the Competency Determination (CD) standard, in addition to meeting all local graduation requirements. Students must either earn a scaled score of at least 472 on the grade 10 MCAS ELA and 486 pn the grade 10 MCAS Mathematics tests, or fulfill the requirements of an Educational Proficiency Plan (EPP).

Students must also earn a scaled score of at least 220 on one of the high school MCAS Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) tests. (or the interim passing standard for next-generation Biology or Introductory Physics)
